Software - Market models

Energy Link develops and supports software models for licensing to wholesale market participants or for use in-house in support of modelling and consultancy services.

EMarket

The simulation tool designed and developed from the ground up to be fast, accurate and flexible for modelling the New Zealand electricity supply system and its spot market. It is intended for electricity market and transmission analysts who are dissatisfied with models which are slow and do not accurately reflect the many important physical and commercial details of the New Zealand setting.

EMarket is a unique simulation tool optimised for New Zealand. It provides the most accurate view of the interaction between the commercial and technical factors impacting on the spot market including demand, water management, thermal generation, losses, reserves and the details and capacity of the transmission grid.

As a comprehensive electricity market modelling solution, using EMarket requires a commitment to obtaining quality input data, and to modelling relevant scenarios. Energy Link can provide the full spectrum of support services for EMarket:

  • Software only — we assist you evaluate EMarket, provide basic grid and demand data, and get you up and running once you have licensed the software.
  • Supported modelling — we provide the EMarket software for you to run in-house, together with a range of supporting services including input data, support workbooks which we maintain for your modelling team as the data changes, and backup modelling capability as required.
  • Consultancy services — we provide you with our standard subscription reports, or project-based modelling and consulting services, all based on our use of EMarket.

EMarketOffer

EMarketOffer, the complete visualisation and half-hourly simulation system for the New Zealand electricity market, is designed for middle office electricity market and transmission analysts who are dissatisfied with the disparate array of historical and forecast market data currently available for analysis. The software is a unique half-hourly market analysis and scenario modelling system that provides an unparalleled view of the interaction between the market and the transmission system. Unlike PSSE and other powerflow analysers, EMarketOffer uses a fast and intuitive market clearance algorithm to accurately replicate the operation of SPD (spot market clearing engine used in New Zealand.) We have developed a fully-featured graphical simulation and analysis environment that operates standalone or fully integrated with em6 and COMIT sourced data and in-house databases.

GMarket and I-Gen

In addition Energy Link has developed the GMarket gas market model and the I-Gen electricity generation build model.

GMarket models the dynamic interactions between supply and demand in the wholesale gas market to obtain forecast prices, drilling and gas reserves. On the supply side the development of reserves for natural gas depends on factors including the rate of drilling, average success rate per well, average size of discovery, the costs of field development and the possibility of gas importation.

On the demand side, gas consumption is driven by factors including the price and avaiability of gas, and the returns from the use of gas, e.g. international methanol prices (gas is a feedstock for Methanol production) and gas-fired thermal generation is a key player in the electricity market.

GMarket also provides us with gas prices for use in our electricity forecasts.

The I-Gen model is used to determine scenarios for the building of new generation for use in our longer term electricity price forecasts. I-Gen models the dynamics of the electricity market in enough detail to provide forecast price signals for building new generation of varying types, e.g. thermal generation, wind, hydro and geothermal.
